  • 9 Mar 2007: The Great Global Warming Swindle? - An interesting Channel 4 documentary screened last night presented an alternative view on the causes of global warming. It is clear that scientists are not as united on this issue as we would think; the alternative explanation being that CO2 is produced as a result of and not the cause of global warming; the root cause is considered to be solar activity and the associated level of (shielding) cloud formation. There were definitely some interesting evidence and testimonies presented, although no real disagreement that we are in a period of warming and climate change. Who is wrong and who is right on the explanation of the causes? We may not know at this stage, but does it matter? The alternative view does not really detract from the central and wider sustainability challenge, that we need to adapt to climate changes and live in more sustainable ways. We still need to be efficient and sustainable in how we use our finite resources, and consider the impact we have on society and the environment. At Earthshine we also believe it still makes good business sense to be efficient and sustainable. Furthermore, regardless of whether CO2 is a lead or lag indicator of global warming, politically and economically it is probably a good idea to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels in any case? Scientists and academics will always disagree on causes and effects, the key is that we make the best decisions about where we invest our time and valuable resources to make a positive difference to our lives.
